5 Good Reasons To Eat Organic Food

My family has been committed to eating organic food for many years. Now that I’morganic an independent college student, I still buy organic produce, meat and dairy products to cook the most nutritious meals possible.

If you want to eat healthy, organic is a smart priority
Organic products are grown in environmentally friendly ways, without toxic or persistent agricultural chemicals. Organic agriculture is a production method that emphasizes the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality.

Choosing organic food vs. non-organic food is just one of the many decisions you’ll make while grocery shopping. But it’s not complicated. If you look at the facts, organic just makes sense. Here are five good reasons to buy and eat organic food:

1)  You avoid chemicals
Chemicals are for cleaning products, not your food. Commercially grown foods are a cocktail of chemical poisons, and eating organically grown foods is the only way to avoid them. More than 600 active chemicals are registered for agricultural use in America. The National Academy of Science reports that 90% of the chemicals applied to foods have not been tested for long-term health effects before being deemed “safe.”

2)  You benefit from more nutrients
Compared to non-organic foods, organically grown foods have more nutrients—vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and micronutrients—because the soil is nourished and managed by responsible standards and sustainable practices. Studies comparing the nutrition of organically grown and conventionally grown fruits, vegetables and grains have found that organic foods contain significantly more nutrients.

3)  You avoid hormones, antibiotics and drugs in animal products
Conventional meat and dairy products are at the highest risk for contamination by harmful substances. Did you know that more than 90% of the pesticides we consume are in the fat/tissue of meat and dairy products? Millions of pounds of antibiotics are used in animal feed each year. Cows, chickens and pigs are fed animal parts, by-products, fish meal and grains chock-full of toxins and chemicals.

Not so with organic! Meat that is certified organic is from animals fed organically-grown feed, given fresh air and outdoor access —- no antibiotics or growth promoting hormones allowed.

4)  You reduce pollution and protect water and soil
Buying organic means supporting the environment. Agricultural pesticides, fertilizers and chemicals are contaminating the environment, destroying fertile farmland and poisoning water supplies. But certified organic standards avoid all toxic chemicals in farming and demand responsible management of healthy soil.

5)  You enjoy better taste
Food should taste the best it can be, right? I dare you to try organic and taste the difference. Organically grown foods generally taste better because nourished, well-balanced soil creates strong, healthy plants.
